Helping preserve an important women in history.

The Frederick Business & Professional Women's Club, Inc., recently made a donation to the John Hanson Memorial Association to help fund a marker on the recently discovered grave of Jane Hanson, this country's first First Lady. She was the wife of John Hanson, the first president, from 1781 to 1782, of the original United States government under the Articles of Confederation. Jane Hanson's grave was “lost” for many years. She died in her Frederick home on February 21, 1812, and was buried in the cemetery at All Saints Episcopal Church, located at that time on East All Saints Street. In 1913, the graves in the cemetery were moved to Mount Olivet Cemetery and reinterred, and the East All Saints Street cemetery property was sold for development. That property later was for many years the site of the Greyhound Bus Terminal and is now occupied by condominiums. At the time of the move, just under one-fourth of the graves were identified from still legible headstones and were reinterred at Mount Olivet Cemetery with these markers. Identification of the remaining graves proved difficult. Incomplete records, a lack of egible headstones, and unmarked coffins in crypts prevented the association of names with specific remains; these unidentified 286 graves were placed in a mass grave in Mount Olivet. Research by Hanson descendant Peter H. Michael, author of Remembering John Hanson: A Biography of the First President of the Original United States Government, and officials at Mount Olivet Cemetery determined that Jane Hanson, America's first First Lady, is buried in this mass grave. The Jane Hanson Memorial is planned to be funded equally by private donations and a bill was submitted to the 2013 General Assembly. The donation by Frederick BPW was the first toward making this marker and recognition of this historically significant woman and Frederick resident a reality.
